The first and foremost thing to know about hand shakes is that it is done differently
if not at all depending on different cultures. So make sure you are aware of the local customs before that hand shake. There are 3 important gestures when giving a hand shake.
- Palm Down
- Palm Up
- Straight Palm
And depending on how you give the hand shake one of three attitudes
will be transmitted:
Dominance: this comes with the Palm down approach which will indicate I can
dominate you
Submissive: this comes with the palm Up approach which indicates i will do
whatever you ask me to.
Equality: This is the Straight Palm approach which shows equality. This is
the best gesture to give during a handshake.
According to Allan Pease an author, to create a rapport in a handshake hold
the palms straight, give the same grip pressure that you receive from the other
person. This shows equality and makes everyone feel comfortable.
When giving a hand shake, keep eye contact and smile.
Do not rush into giving a hand shake when you are holding things in the hand you are using to shake the other person's hand. This will only portray how clumsy you are.
Do not give a hand shake when your hands are sweaty, wipe the sweat off.
Remember how you give a hand shake will give the a lasting effect of what kind of person you are.
